talented athlete Program

The Talented Athlete Program is a new opportunity for emerging student-athletes who are committed to their sport and have the desire to study at the University of Melbourne. This program provides an introduction to the Elite Athlete Program and will offer the unique opportunity to work with world class coaches and mentors in areas that are proven to matter when you want to reach the top in your sport. The services offered include, but are not limited to:

  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Sports Psychology seminars
  • Nutrition workshop
  • Mentoring
  • Competition preparation
  • Flexibility and mobility training
  • Injury prevention

The program is offered to year 10 students, who have represented their State or perform at a higher level in their chosen sport. The details of the program are as follows:
 

Age group: Year 10 students
Sports: Applicants from all sports
Day and Time: Wednesday 5.00pm – 6.15pm
Number of Athletes: 15-20
Start Date Term 3: 22nd Aug - 19th Sept 2018 (5 weeks)
Start Date Term 4: 10th Oct - 7th Nov 2018 (5 weeks)
Location: High Performance Studio, Beaurepaire Centre
Cost: $250

The program will begin with a talent testing session, which will help the team of professionals to build and develop a specific training program. This will be followed up by three S&C sessions and a lecture on how to prepare and compete in competition (sports psychology). Student-athletes will also learn the pathways to studying at the University of Melbourne. The program continues in term 4, which four S&C sessions and a lecture which changes to sports nutrition.

Elite athletes from the University have competed at over 150 events at the Olympic Games, and student-athletes and sporting alumni continually represent Australia in a variety of sporting teams each year.

Tony Sephton was appointed Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at the beginning of 2016, bringing a wealth of knowledge to the position, with his background as Head of Performance at Hertfordshire University and seven years at the English Institute of Sport. These roles included working with athletes who attended the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics, in addition to working for England Golf for seven years. Tony’s passion is to impart his knowledge and experience to best prepare his athletes for future success.
