A 48-strong student team from the University of Melbourne took to the slopes of Mount Buller to tackle rival Universities in the annual Australian University Sport Snow Sports Championships last week. The University of Melbournes home mountain proved to be an advantage with the University’s Winged Victory team re-claiming the Women’s National Championship, Cross Country and Overall titles.
Top results from the week came from Sochi Winter Olympian and High-Performance Scholarship holder Anton Grimus, claiming gold in the Giant Slalom and Super G, as well as silver in Slalom, earning the male Alpine Champion award in the process. Fellow Winter Olympian and High Performance Scholarship holder Katya Crema took gold in the Women’s Super G.
“We are very pleased with the team’s performance this week”, said Tom Lutwyche, Australian University Games (AUG) team manager. “Our student athletes have shown that they are of the highest calibre once again”.
Other medals were won by Chrisy Richardson, Nick Montgomery, James Morrison, Lisa McComb and Callum Jones.
Focus for Winged Victory now turns to defending its AUG Overall Winner trophy won on the Gold Coast last year. The 2014 competition takes place in Sydney from 28 September through 3 October. Follow the results on the Melbourne Uni Winged Victory facebook page.
