Oarsome Ormond continue river dominance
28 May; Thomas Lutwyche

Ormond College ruled the Yarra River again on Saturday at the annual College Rowing regatta, winning all four boat races for their second clean sweep in three years.

Excellent on water conditions greeted rowers and supporters for the 7.30am start as sun bathed the hundreds of college spectators eager to cheer on their respective crews.

Following the preliminary heats of the morning, the first final of the day was the Men’s Second VIII. It was a tightly fought race with Ormond saluting over a fading St. Hilda’s crew by 3 lengths, with Trinity following in third place another length back. This was the third consecutive year the Ormond crew has won the event .The University College crew was victorious in the B final.

The Women’s Second VIII final saw St. Hilda’s and St. Mary’s tackle the reigning champions Ormond. The Ormond crew proved too strong leading from start to finish, winning by 2 lengths to St. Hilda’s, with St. Mary’s a further length back. Like the Men’s Second’s crew, this was the third consecutive year Ormond was victorious in this race. Queen’s college won the B final.

In the Women’s First VIII final, reigning champions Trinity carried 7 of their winning 2013 crew into the race looking to defend their title against Ormond and Queen’s. It was Ormond who crossed the line first in a dominant display, winning the race by 4 lengths from Trinity to take the victory and set their college up for a potential clean sweep.

In the Men’s First VIII Ormond powered to a dominant 5 length victory from Trinity and Queen’s to defend their title and put the cream on top of a successful day for their college. The crew has become a powerful force winning the last four First VIII races, dating back to 2010.

Thanks go to Melbourne University Boat Club and its volunteers, especially regatta manager Stuart Alexander for helping with the coordination and running of the program on the day.

Congratulations to the following winning crews:
