The University’s affiliated competitive clubs have started a promising season of winter sport.
Winter Club competitions include: Rugby, Mens and Womens AFL, Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball, Volleyball, Basketball, Hockey and Soccer.
“Our Sporting Clubs provide a great opportunity for students to participate in sporting activity,” said Director of Sport Tim Lee. “Whether they are participating in local competitions or high performance programs, it is important that students are engaged in regular physical activity.
“In addition, our high performance clubs offer a unique opportunity to raise the public profile of sport at the University, as well as the leadership attributes of our student-athletes” Lee continued.
A season starter highlight is the promotion of the Hockey Club’s senior Mens team to the Hockey Victoria Mens Premier League, following its minor premiership in the 2015 Mens Vic League. This year, the team will face strong competition playing current and past Kookaburra and international players in the Premier League.
The University will also be represented in other state league play with the Volleyball Club competing in the Volleyball Victoria State League and the Melbourne University Lightning competing in the Victorian Netball League.
The University football club is playing in the William Buck Premier division of the Victorian Amateur Football Association, with both the University Blacks and University Blues aiming for a finals berth come season’s end. The two University teams commemorated those who fell during times of war at the ANZAC Day Derby on Saturday 23 April.
