The University has won two National Championships in Men’s and Women’s distance running, bringing the total number of National Titles in 2018 to 8. The latest Titles ensured Melbourne leap-frogged Monash to claim the John Campbell trophy.
Outgoing UniSport Australia CEO Don Knapp announced at Friday night’s 2018 Blues and Sports Awards that the University of Melbourne’s 7th and 8th pennants had moved it ahead of all other Southern Universities, which comprises of institutions from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. University Team Captain Isaac Smith (Rowing) was on hand to accept the award and acknowledged it was a great way to end the year for the University.
The two pennants also moved Melbourne up the pennant tally from 4th to 3rd – 1 pennant behind 1st place University of Queensland, 2nd on a countback of placings, behind Sydney University with T20 Cricket the remaining Uni Nationals event in 2018.
This is the first time the trophy has been awarded under the new Uni Nationals format. It is awarded to the best performing University across the Division 1 events, according to the number of pennants won. Melbourne last won the John Campbell trophy in 2005 as the best performing institution at the-then named Southern University Games.

2005 – The last time the University of Melbourne won the John Campbell Trophy.

510 – The number of student-athletes that represented the University of Melbourne in 2018 at Uni Nationals or other Intervarsity competitions such as the Big Blue, Varsity Challenge Cup or International Intervarsity events.
52 – The number of teams that represented the University of Melbourne in Intervarsity competitions.
