Three members of the Melbourne University Cycling (MUcyc) club have been invited to participate in the 8th Meiji Jingu Gaien University Student Criterium (Tokyo), the final race in the 2013 Japanese University Road Race Cup.
Commerce and science alumni Eric Sheppard and Peter Braunsteins and science undergraduate Nicholas Katsonis will represent the University in the criterium style race, a 30km course on the streets of Tokyo city. The race takes place on 16 February as it promotes cycling among the student population living in the city.
John Prince, head of the University delegation for the trip and secretary of MUcyc, stated, “It is a great opportunity to race in an international bike race, there aren’t many opportunities to ride in that type of race”.
The race fosters not only sporting partnerships with Japanese Universities, but MU Sport hopes to host Japanese student track riders in Melbourne later this year.
