Lightning Strikes This Weekend

5 February; Peter Walker

Teams from Melbourne University Lightning will compete for the first time under their new moniker this weekend when the Victorian Netball League (VNL) season gets underway at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

Lightning will field teams in the 19/U, Division 1 and Championship divisions of the VNL. The teams are shaping up well according to Kaylea McQuade, high performance coordinator for MU Lightning.

“All three teams have improved a great deal since the start of the pre-season, with practise matches against other VNL teams and time at MU Sport’s fitness facilities.  The girls are in great condition for the start of the season.

“The partnership with the University has definitely improved the players performance. Access to the gym and recovery facilities has seen fitness levels increase drastically, resulting in better performances and decision making on the court”.

The official season launch for the Lightning last weekend was attended by nearly 100 players, coaches and support staff. The official players uniforms were unveiled and kits were presented to each player.

The University partnered with the club last year to create a high performing presence in Victorian state netball. The partnership provides pathways for Elite student-athletes to pursue careers in professional netball. The University is committed to providing education and support to athletes who are undertaking studies.
