The University of Melbourne has a long and proud tradition of supporting student-athletes in their sporting and academic pursuits. For more than 150 years, students have combined study and sport as part of the Melbourne Experience.
Elite athletes from the University have competed at over 150 events at the Olympic Games, and student-athletes and sporting alumni continually represent Australia in a variety of sporting teams each and every year.

Become one of Melbourne’s leaders and achievers on, and beyond, the sporting field.

The Elite Athlete Program aims to:

  • Recognise that elite sporting activity can impact on a student-athlete's ability to reach their academic potential
  • Support elite and emerging athletes in achieving academic success, such that their vocational transition after sport is seamless
  • Develop University of Melbourne Sporting clubs through the support of elite and emerging athletes
  • Connect athletes with a life-long affinity to the University community
  • Develop leaders and role models in sport, business and the community


The Elite Athlete Program functions by:

  • Recognising elite athletes and supporting them with flexible study assistance
  • Supporting elite and emerging athletes with a range of financial and in-kind assistant for their studies and sporting endeavours
The University of Melbourne is also an endorsed member of the Australian Institute of Sport's Elite Athlete Friendly University network:

 


Future Students

Elite Athlete Entry Scheme (2017 Applications Now Open)

The Elite Athlete Entry Scheme assists applicants who can demonstrate that their Year 12 or undergraduate studies (for postgraduate applications), has been impacted by elite level training, competition or performance.

Please note, this application is for prospective University of Melbourne students applying for undergraduate or post graduate degrees.  Current University of Melbourne undergraduate students are eligible to apply for postgraduate studies under this scheme.
 
This is an Office of Admissions application which must be submitted separately on the relevant application form by the due date (please note that due dates are different for undergraduate and post graduate applications and for each semester intake).

Sport Scholarship Applications for students undertaking initial admissions process are now closed but will be available again once offers have been made

Sport Scholarships provide elite and emerging student-athletes with financial and in-kind support to assist them to reach their potential whilst studying at Melbourne. There is a variety of Sports Scholarship support on offer which can include:

  • Up to $3,000 to assist with competition and travel costs
  • Physiotherapy services (fully provided or discounted)
  • Professional Strength and Conditioning coaching and programming
  • 12 month Student Aquatic and Fitness (ScholarFit) membership
  • Subsidy of costs for inter-varsity representative sporting events
Sports Scholarship holders undertake to represent the University of Melbourne at appropriate inter-varsity championships or events during their the term of their scholarship.

Andrew and Geraldine Buxton Athletics Scholarship

A new University of Melbourne scholarship will support up-and-coming student-athletes as they strive to reach their athletic and academic potential. The Andrew and Geraldine Buxton Athletics Scholarship will assist one student-athlete aspiring to be among the best in the world whilst they study at Australia’s number one ranked university.

The scholarship is the first elite athlete scholarship of any kind in Australia to be established in perpetuity by a donor. The scholarship will encourage rising track and field talent to remain in Australia.

The scholarship provides $10,000 per year in a cash award, as well as additional in-kind support. Students who are studying or applying to study at the University of Melbourne are eligible to apply.

The Elite Athletes in Schools Program provides Primary and Secondary Schools with the opportunity to engage with our elite athletes about their achievements and experiences, and what it takes to be a successful student-athlete

Elite Athlete Recognition Application

The Elite Athlete and Performers’ Procedure (MPF1072) can provide flexible study assistance for recognized elite athletes, who due to their sporting endeavors, have extensive, yet inflexible, commitments that may interfere with their study. Assistance may include:

  • Timetabling to suit sporting commitments 
  • Renegotiation of assignment and assessment deadlines.
  • Flexibility around meeting minimum attendance requirements
  • Alternate Exam Arrangements - Flexible Study Assistance Request Form
  • Important! If you require flexible study assistance for an exam, you must complete a Flexible Study Assistance Request Form in addition to an application for Elite Athlete Recognition.
  • Cross institutional study if required to temporarily relocate.

International Travel Grants

Additional financial assistance of up to $1,000 may be available to eligible elite athletes. Applications are open all year round; however, grants are subject to the availability of funds.

Applicants must satisfy all of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Selected to represent their country in a National Team
  • In an underage or open/senior level team
  • Competing at an overseas competition

Interchange – International Exchange Opportunities 

Interchange is operated in conjunction with the University of Melbourne’s Global Mobility Study Abroad and Exchange.Interchange provides elite athletes with the opportunity to continue their study and elite-level sport abroad, tapping into partnerships and support structures the University has with similar tertiary institutions around the globe.  Interchange is available for inbound and outbound elite athletes.
