Leaving the University at 6pm on Friday night, the Melbourne Unibicycles cycling team departed for the Victorian Road Series Sam Miranda race weekend in Wangaratta. The weekend’s team comprised Sean Lake, Ross Mueller, Sam Barnden and Director Sportiff John Prince and the racing included a 103km Road Race on Saturday and an 88km Handicap on Sunday.
Saturday’s A Grade field was made up of 68 riders, and an early break would prove to be the decisive move. Our boys made numerous attempts to bridge, but after the up-hill gravel slog it would be the main field all together still chasing the morning’s break. In the end all three of the team finished in the main bunch. Sean Lake was best placed in 18th position while Ross Mueller and Sam Barnden were 22nd and 38th respectively. Sunday saw Sam head off first in the 6min bunch, and Sean and Ross in pursuit in the 3min bunch. Scratch, 3min and 6min all came together at about halfway, making a strong bunch but with too many riders to ride cohesively! With the rest of the field still up the road, the early groups ran away with another Cycling Victoria Handicap win. Ross led Sean out for 3rd in the bunch kick, with Sam and Ross finishing safely inside the bunch. All in all, a solid weekend of riding and team spirit, and good preparation to our goal event at the upcoming Uni Games in Sydney later this semester.
The team was again fuelled by SiS Nutrition and kept warm and looking good by Nemisis Apparel. Thanks also goes to team sponsors Unibicycles, Premax, Lazer Helmets, Tifosi Sunglasses, Schwalbe, Boeshield Lubricants and Melbourne University Sport.
