University of Melbourne Produces Another Excellent Year at the 2014 Australian University Games

7 October 2014; Carl Junot

The 2014 Australian University Games (AUG) marked the twenty first rendition of the Games.  The University of Melbourne Winged Victory team finished the week with another excellent performance coming second overall with eight National Titles (gold medals), eleven silver and five bronze medals.  Melbourne University Sport would like to give a special thanks to Winged Victory AUG captains Catherine Phillips – Ultimate Frisbee and Daniel Zambon – AFL.
Whilst our ambition was nothing short of overall champions we are proud to finish as the top Victorian University and leave ourselves in excellent position to recapture the overall championship in 2015.

In the context of Winged Victory team success we would like to celebrate a few individual and team performances that are worthy of a special mention;

Gold Medal Performances
Men’s AFL once again captured the Gold Medal with four exceptional individual performances garnering the prestigious Green and Gold Award (award for outstanding sporting performance at an AUS event); Kenny Org, Hugh Curnow, Angus Locke and Sean Bolger.  Winged Victory Badminton met their performance expectations with men’s, women’s and overall Gold.  Congratulations to Badminton Green and Gold recipients Luke Chong, Ashwant Gobinathan, Jessica Jonggowisastro and Vinning Mak.  Men’s and Women’s Cycling finished on top of the leader board to give us the overall Gold in Cycling with Ross Mueller and Scott Gigante receiving  the Green and Gold Award.  Women’s fencing were up to the task as they also captured Gold.  Great work to Emily Marotta and Leah Tausan who received the Green and Gold Award for fencing.  Women’s Golf turned in an exceptional performance capturing a Gold medal in match play.  Well done to Lille Callow and Alex Radevski for receiving the Green and Gold for Golf.  As expected Ultimate Frisbee dominated the field bringing home yet another Gold medal.  Ultimate Green and Gold award winners include Catherine Phillips, Georgia Egan-Griffiths, Lochlan Wise and Brendan Ashcroft.

Silver Medal Performances
With eleven silver medals in the trophy cabinet it would be fair to say that several of our sports were “knocking on the door” of championship performances.  Congratulations to the following runners up; Women’s Athletics, Men’s and Women’s Hockey – Green and Gold Awards to Liam Williamson, Georgina Mutton and Tegan Brown, Mixed Netball, Men’s and Women’s Rowing, Women’s Squash, Women’s Swimming - Green and Gold Award to Hayley Baker, Men’s and Women’s Table Tennis – Green and Gold Awards to Nathan Van Der Heiden, Mei Yen Ting and Han Yi Lin and Men’s Volleyball.

Bronze Medal Performances
Our five bronze medals include; Men’s Athletics – Green and Gold Award to Ian Douglas, Baseball – Green and Gold Awards to Justin Gourlay and Hiroshi Narasaki, Women’s Football – Green and Gold Award to Maya Edgerton-Bachmann, Women’s Netball, Men’s Squash – Green and Gold Award to Drew Flowers.

Off the Field
Off the field Melbourne University Sport would like to give a Gold Medal to all of our participants for turning in a great week of social and sporting balance.  Whilst we strive for competitive excellence we value the experience you have through the social programs provided by AUG.
